The United States is grateful for Algeria’s efforts to advance peace and security in the region

The US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security, Bonnie Denise Jenkins, expressed on Monday in Algiers her country’s gratitude to Algeria for its relentless efforts to advance peace and security in the region, noting the “convergence” of the approach of both countries in this regard.

In a statement to the media following her meeting with the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, Ms Jenkins said that the meeting was “productive, and we had a wide-ranging discussion on Algerian-American cooperation, security in the world, and the situation in the Sahel. We noted the convergence of our countries’ approach to security in the region and in the world, focusing on the issue of the arms embargo.”

The US official also stated that “the partnership between the two countries in the fight against terrorism remains strong as we work together bilaterally, side by side, to support peace and prosperity in the region.” Ms Jenkins added that the meeting with the President of the Republic was “an affirmation of the countries’ shared commitments to many security issues of interest to the two countries,” which are working, she said, to “build strong security, economic, and cultural ties, ties that are stronger today than even before.”

She stressed that “technical exchange plays a role in building and strengthening Algeria and America’s security relationships at all levels.” The US Undersecretary of State also noted that the bilateral partnership “plays a key economic role, as American companies are seeking investments in Algeria and others are already established here and working to create jobs across a wide range of sectors.”

“The United States is supporting Algeria to diversify its economy,” she said, adding that the visit of Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane to Washington last December, in the framework of the US-Africa Summit, had a “great impact” on the consolidation of bilateral relations.
