Turkey earthquake death toll rises to 45,089

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) said on Wednesday that the death toll from the devastating earthquakes in southern Turkey has risen to 45,089.

In a statement, AFAD said that 11,020 tremors were recorded following the 6 February earthquakes, which had their epicentre in Kahramanmaras province.

According to AFAD, these devastating earthquakes killed 45,089 people in the provinces of Kahramanmaras, Adana, Adiyaman, Diyarbakir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa and Elazig.

The same source said that the number of people who were evacuated from the affected areas and those who left these areas with their own means to other provinces amounted to 1,971,589.

On 6 February, a 7.8 earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, followed a few hours later by another 7.6 magnitude earthquake and strong tremors, which caused huge loss of life and damage in both countries.
