Western Sahara: A call to redouble diplomatic efforts to highlight Morocco’s deceptive maneuvers

The Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to Angola, Khalil Ahmed Mahmoud, stressed today, Tuesday, the need to redouble diplomatic efforts at the African level to shed light on Morocco’s deceptive maneuvers, so as not to deceive the countries of the continent, which consider Western Sahara an issue of decolonization.

The Sahrawi diplomat said in a statement to the Algerian News Agency that “it is necessary to shed light on the maneuvers that the Makhzen has recently been using to cover on the one hand the internal situation, and its attempt on the other hand to mislead international public opinion, especially the African one, with the justice of his alleged thesis in Western Sahara.”

Khalil explained that “Morocco’s efforts to spread lies about what it called the recognition by some African countries of its alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara by opening consulates or diplomatic representations for them in the occupied territories, similar to what happened with Angola, to delude Moroccan and international public opinion into mobilizing African support for its thesis has failed today, especially after some African countries renewed their firm stance on the issue of Western Sahara and supported the Sahrawi people’s right to freedom and independence.”

The diplomat mentioned that these fallacies came after the Angolan ambassador presented his credentials to Sahrawi President Brahim Ghali, which, according to him, caused an “earthquake” in the Angolan-Moroccan relations so that for the first time after Luanda’s recognition of Western Sahara, an ambassador was appointed there.

According to the ambassador, Angola’s decision was not “arbitrary”, but was a direct and conscious response to all attempts by the Moroccan occupation regime to impose fait accompli policies in Western Sahara. It also expresses “an explicit rejection of the Moroccan pressures exerted on some countries.”

Mr. Khalil confirmed that he once again stood at the Angolan position after his recent meeting with the Director of Foreign Relations of the ruling party in the country, who confirmed Luanda’s firm position on the conflict in Western Sahara, and that all that Morocco is promoting are just rumors, and it is the same position that was expressed by the delegate of Angola during his intervention in the work of the United Nations Fourth Committee of the decolonization, where he supported the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and stressed that the issue of Western Sahara is one of decolonization.

The representative of Western Sahara praised this Angolan diplomatic position, which he considered a “strong response” to Moroccan propaganda and “an explicit rejection of the attempts of the Moroccan occupation regime to impose a colonial fait accompli in Western Sahara,” reiterating the Sahrawi Republic’s willingness and determination to “deepen relations of cooperation between the two countries.”

Angola also showed a special interest in the conflict in Western Sahara when its official media touched upon the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people for freedom and independence on the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the declaration of armed struggle in Western Sahara on May 20, 1973, dedicating an important part of radio and television programs and pages of print and electronic newspapers, to explaining the most prominent Milestones of the struggle of the Saharawi people.
