Film Director Yamina Bachir Chouikh dies at the age of 68

Director Yamina Bachir Chouikh died on Sunday morning in Algiers, at the age of 68 following a long illness, the Adwaa Association announced.

Born on March 20, 1954 in Algiers, the deceased took her first steps in the world of the 7th art at the National Center of Algerian Cinema (1973) where she specialized in editing.

Wife of the great filmmaker Mohamed Chouikh and mother of the young director Yasmine Chouikh, the late who mastered several cinema professions participated in several works such as “Omar Guatlato” (1976) by Merzak Alouach and “vents du Sud” by Mohamed Lakhder Hamina (1982).

She edited several of her husband’s films, such as “La citadelle” (1989), “Youcef or the legend of the seventh sleeper” (1993), “L’arche du désert” (1997) and Douar of women (2005).

After five years of work, the deceased finally launched her first feature film, in this case “Rachida” (2002) which deals with the black decade in Algeria. The film was awarded and nominated at several festivals including Cannes in 2002.

The late Yamina Bachir Chouikh will be buried today after Eddohr’s prayer at the El Alia cemetery.
