President Tebboune highlights the convergence of views between Algeria and Italy on regional issues

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighted, on Monday in Algiers, the convergence of views between Algeria and Italy on the need to work together to contribute to the establishment of security and peace in the Mediterranean region and a great rapprochement of views on regional issues.

In a joint press conference with the President of the Italian Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, the President of the Republic welcomed “the convergence of views on the need to work together to contribute to the establishment of security and peace, particularly in our Mediterranean region”.

He added: “What I have noticed is that Mrs Meloni’s positions on several regional issues reflect a great convergence of views”.

“We have expressed our extreme concern about the multiple conflicts hotbeds that threaten peace and stability in the world and generate worrying crises with adverse repercussions on food security, especially on the African continent,” he said.

The President of the Republic also said that the focus had been on “the need to reach a consensual solution to the Libyan crisis, based on the organisation of elections and support for the national reconciliation process, within the framework of the inclusive dialogue backed by the UN “.

Regarding the situation in Mali, Mr Tebboune underlined the imperative “implementation of the peace and reconciliation agreement resulting from the Algiers process, and expressed our common will to coordinate efforts to support the brothers in Mali, and provide them with political and financial support from the international community, through the strengthening of the role of the UN mission -Minusma-“.

Referring to the Western Sahara issue, President Tebboune welcomed “the positive and moderate position of Italy advocating a just solution to this issue, in accordance with UN resolutions, in order to allow the Sahrawi people to enjoy their legitimate rights.

“We agreed to support the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General Staffan de Mistura and the UN mission for the organisation of a referendum in Western Sahara (Minurso)”, the President of the Republic added.

The Palestinian issue was also discussed during the meeting, thus “the constant and principled position of support for the Palestinian people and the defence of their legitimate rights to the establishment of an independent state with El Quds as its capital, was reaffirmed,” he said, stressing the need to bring the Zionist occupation to comply with UN decisions and resolutions and to put an end to the repeated abuses committed against the Palestinian people who are still suffering from constant aggression.

President Tebboune expressed his wish that “the State of Palestine could become a full member of the UN this year”.
