“Raï, popular music of Algeria” classified as intangible cultural heritage of humanity

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inscribed Thursday in Rabat, the Raï (folk song of Algeria), on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

This inscription took place during the 17th meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which is being held in Rabat until December 3.

Algeria has, with the classification of the Raï genre, 9 elements inscribed on the World Heritage List, namely Ahellil of Gourara, the wedding costume of Tlemcen (Chedda), the celebration of Mawlid Ennabaoui (S’boue) in Timimoun, Rakb Ouled Sidi Cheikh, the Sebeïba ceremony, in addition to three elements in common with neighboring states, “imzad”, “couscous” and “Arabic calligraphy”.
